REPORT: Beach Erosion Committee

The Beach Erosion Committee did not meet since the November 3rd meeting. However, by E-Mail it was agreed to communicate to the SEG that the Beach Erosion Committee is considering developing recommendations to the SEG for two additional studies, as outlined below. The Minutes of the November 3, 1999 Beach Erosion Committee indicate that the concepts for these two studies were discussed at that meeting. The two potential study recommendations are as follows:

(1). Accomplish a comprehensive Benefit/Cost Study that combines Harbor Deepening and Maintenance Projects, Beach Restoration Projects, and other Environmental Reclamation/Protection Projects for Georgia’s Coastal Islands. Such a study would explore the interrelationships and synergism potentials of addressing the entire SYSTEM, rather than addressing multiple SUBSYSTEMS (such as the Harbor, Tybee Island, Other Islands, etc.). It is recognized that some of this is being done partially, but there is no overall Benefit/Cost study underway that would bring all the data together in one summary fashion.

  1. Accomplish a scientific study to determine the three Coarse/Fine Sand Ratios suitable for the beneficial use of dredged materials in three alternate locations:
    1. On the Shoreline
    2. Within Existing Sand dunes
    3. In Near-Shore Areas, With Turbidity Considerations.
