There were four items on the meeting Agenda, and the meeting had the following results:

1. Bo Ellis provided a status report on the Beach Erosion Study underway by GPA through their consultants ATM. Bo indicated that most of the data collection (field work) has been accomplished, and that the sediment sampling portion of the field work was coordinated with the Skidaway Institute. Dredging records from the Corps of Engineers have also been acquired, and shoreline maps have been ordered. The study will continue with calibration of the hydrodynamic model and actual projection of project impacts, etc., during the upcoming months. The study draft report should be available in late summer/early fall, 2000, at which time Peer Review would be accomplished.

2. Charles Griffen reported on the status of the Coarse/Fine Sand Ratio Study. A draft Task Statement for the Study was reviewed with the committee, and suggestions were made for changes.

3. It was determined that the Beach Erosion Committee would recommend to the SEG that the SEG recommend to the GPA that the Coarse/Fine Sand Ratio be accomplished, recognizing that the GPA has already agreed to accomplish the Study. Involving the SEG has several benefits, including the early involvement of various agencies concerned with the study results and implementation process.

4. It was determined that the Beach Erosion Committee would recommend to the SEG that the SEG recommend to the GPA that the GPA assist the City of Tybee Island in acquiring federal funding for a Comprehensive Benefit/Cost Study On Combining Savannah Channel Maintenance Projects with Beach Restoration Projects, with perceived synergistic and complimentary effects from the linking of projects. Since the Georgia Department of Transportation is the local sponsor for harbor maintenance projects, Charles Griffen indicated the GPA would assist in acquiring GADOT involvement. A Draft of the appropriate language for requesting federal funding, through Jack Kingston’s office, is attached.
