Sedimentation Analysis

Started:  2nd Quarter 2005
Completed:
May 2006

Brief description:

The sedimentation analysis is an engineering effort that will determine the effect of the proposed channel deepening on maintenance dredging volumes, shoal locations, present advance maintenance locations, berth maintenance practices, and bank erosion potential.  The scope of the study will cover both the entrance channel and the Savannah River channel.

The effect of the proposed deepening on the shoaling volume may directly affect the maintenance costs due to potential changes in the quantity dredged.  The shoal locations may affect the channel maintenance costs by increasing or decreasing the pumping distance to disposal areas, thereby increasing or decreasing the unit dredging cost.  Shoal locations may affect the channel maintenance operational plan by having to shift the location of advance maintenance areas to account for new shoal locations.  Berth areas will be examined for potential changes in shoaling.  Data from this analysis will be used to modify (if necessary) the existing Dredged Material Management Plan.
